Desert Bus - iPhone games roundup

Published on by iPhone games roundup

Not so much a good game, as a game entirely impervious to any and all criticism because it was never meant to be good. Desert Bus was originally created as a mini-game for the never-released Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors on the Mega CD. It’s a game that sees you driving across 360 miles of arid desert in a bus. If that sounds a bit too exciting, get this: there are no turns, and you have to do it in real-time. That’s about eight hours to complete the journey. And when you’re done, you earn one point, turn around and head back the other way. You also can’t pause the game, ever.

You’ll most likely never finish a single run, unless you really like sitting there with one thumb on your touch-screen, holding your iPhone steady so the accelerometer-controlled steering doesn’t send you flying off the road. But that’s kind of the point. It’s stupid and awful. But it’s also funny. However much you might want to hate it, you can’t help but respect the fact that it successfully makes a joke via the medium of game design.

And if that wasn’t enough, all profits from the iOS release are going to charity. Consider buying it.
